Best Travel Attractions of Colorado

This state, like no other neighboring areas of the South West and Real America, lends itself ideally to on-the-road tours, thanks to a large number of scenic roads and unexpected natural wonders that do not require great efforts to be enjoyed. Check out the previous part of top destinations of Colorado State to update your travel check-list!

Rocky Mountains National Park

For those who love alpine landscapes, the Rocky Mountain National Park is a marvel not to be missed: over 1000 square kilometers of snow-capped peaks, mountain lakes, and wildflowers. It is one of the most visited parks in the States, so if you are looking for a bit of intimacy, I suggest you go hiking (there are almost 500 km of trails waiting for you).

If, on the other hand, you want to admire the wonders of the park from the comfort of your car, you can take the Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved road in America: scenic spots such as Forest Canyon, Fairview Curve, Alpin Visitor Center, Gore Range, and Lava Cliff offer splendid views on the mountains.

Red Rocks Amphitheater

In the midst of a beautiful natural esplanade, on a protruding red rock conformation, stands one of the most spectacular amphitheaters in the world: from here you will not only be able to admire a landscape that extends as far as the eye can see but also listen to live music, see that the Red Rocks Amphitheater hosts many concerts.

But that’s not all: the famous amphitheater is located inside the Red Rocks Park, where there are numerous hiking trails, the best known being the one that leads to the Geologic Overlook. For more information on visiting the amphitheater take a look at our article on the Red Rocks Amphitheater.
Where to stay : the closest point of support is in Golden (15 minutes), but you can also stay overnight in Denver , 25 minutes away by car rental Denver airport.

Canyons of the Ancients

The large number of testimonies and archaeological findings (over 6000) make Canyon of the Ancients a priceless treasure, one of the places, along with the Mesa Verde park , where you can come into contact with the ancestral culture of the Anasazi people. At the same time, on the site, you can also admire a series of plateaus, rocky conformations and canyons that make it very interesting also from the natural point of view.

The Canyon of the Ancients is crossed by some paved roads, but most are unpaved paths; almost all the most interesting canyons and mesa are not accessible by car, but by excursions. The most visited archaeological sites are Lowry Pueblo , Painted Hand Pueblo and Sand Canyon Pueblo , but if you feel like venturing beyond the beaten track you will soon find that this ancestral site has much more to offer.

Top Destinations of Colorado

Colorado , crossed by the imposing Rocky Mountains ( Rocky Mountains ), is the State of the great heights, with the highest concentration of peaks exceeding 14,000 feet (over 4200 meters), but if you think that this State can reserve interesting things only to lovers of mountain trekking and ski slopes you will soon have to change your mind. This is only first 3 gorgeous sights of this state, look for other 3 of best travel attractions of Colorado in our next post!

Garden of the Gods

Characterized by imposing red rock towers that rise among the uniform vegetation, the Garden of the Gods is a unique place in the world, not by chance that the ancient native tribes attributed to it a supernatural power, able to give life to unlikely rock formations that they seem to defy the laws of physics, such as the “Balanced Rock” (an imposing rock in constant precarious balance) and “Three Graces” (3 thin rocky walls with an unusual shape).

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Speaking of unlikely and unique places in the world, this unjustly little-known national park certainly deserves a special place: 142 sq km of impressive sand dunes (even more than 200 meters high) framed by a memorable background, that of the majestic peaks (beyond 4000 meters) of the Sangre de Cristo and San Juan mountains.

The park offers many trails for hiking but the activity that you absolutely must not miss here is sandboarding: in essence, it is about having fun making slips with a board over the dunes (an activity that you can also do in the White park Sands in New Mexico ). In the video below the park rangers explain the technique to be applied … nothing really transcendental … the tables can be rented at the entrance to the park (Oasis Store) or in the nearby town of Alamosa (Kristi Mt. Sports).

Colorado National Monument

The imposing natural red rock spectacle of the Colorado National Monument is one of those mysteriously little-known and unfairly underrated marvels. Those looking for the typical views of the American West, like Monument Valley, should take this destination seriously.

To fully enjoy it, you can take the Historic Rim Rock Drive, one of the most scenic drives in the SouthWest. The route is 23 miles long and is a marvelous succession of panoramas constituted by innumerable red rock canyons interspersed with vegetation rich in junipers. Be careful while driving because the road for some stretches is quite challenging.
